Workpiece handling at DMG MORI

In modern manufacturing, automating recurring workflows is one of the most common ways to optimise processes. One of the main tasks of such automation solutions is reliable workpiece handling, in other words, the autonomous transport of raw parts from a workpiece storage system to a lathe or machining centre. Following machining, the parts must then be removed – usually by means of a robot or gantry loaders – and stored in workpiece storage. The process can be individually adapted depending on the application. This means, for example, that downstream processing steps such as deburring, measuring, and labelling can also be integrated into a workpiece handling system.

Increased productivity with flexible workpiece handling

Using a workpiece handling system has far-reaching effects on manufacturing productivity. For one thing, it eliminates the need for the manual handling of the components by personnel at the machine. This means there is additional time for more demanding tasks such as programming and quality control. When equipped with automated workpiece handling, a machine tool can also be put to optimal use – even during unmanned night and weekend shifts. The automated handling of the components also influences machining quality. This is because inaccuracies caused by manual clamping and unclamping are eliminated in an automated process. As a result, users benefit from consistent production results.

Comprehensive portfolio for individual workpiece handling

As a pioneer of automation in machine tool manufacturing, DMG MORI consistently drives developments in automated workpiece handling. The portfolio contains various gantry loaders and intelligent robot solutions, thus enabling the implementation of optimum workpiece handling for almost any application.

    Gantry loader

Gantry loaders such as the GX series from DMG MORI feature a compact, space-saving design. They make it possible to handle workpieces with a high level of productivity and flexibility, both on one machine or in a chain of several machines. Additional operations - including washing, measuring, and labelling - can be integrated into the system to achieve end-to-end processes. DMG MORI also integrates its gantry loaders into the machine control system, which ensures easy programming and set-up.

    Robot

The range of DMG MORI robot solutions includes the Robo2Go models, the MATRIS Light, the WH Cell, and the modular MATRIS, all of which are intelligent and flexible. They work collaboratively and can be highly customised. This allows users to efficiently automate even complex workpiece handling. The robots can be programmed and set up using the machine control system without any in-depth programming knowledge.
